2025 Inauguration Safety and Road Closures
The 60th Presidential Inauguration occurs on Monday, January 20, 2025. Whether you are a resident or business owner, stay informed and have a plan for the inauguration week.
Road Closures
District residents and business owners are asked to plan for widespread road closures across Downtown Washington. Most roads within the perimeter, bounded by the Potomac River to the west, K Street NW to the north, Second Street NE/SE to the east, and I-395/I-695 to the south will be closed or restricted residential traffic only.
Selected streets will be open for local traffic only from Sunday, January 19, 2025, at approximately 6:00 a.m. through Monday, January 20, 2025, at 12:01 a.m. These roads will be closed to all traffic from Monday, January 20, 2025, at 12:01 a.m. through Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at approximately 6:00 a.m.:
Metro Closures and Adjusted Hours
Metro announced service adjustments for Metrorail and Metrobus to accommodate the expanded security perimeter that will be in effect for Inauguration weekend.
Metrorail
Per the request of the United States Secret Service and the United States Capitol Police, Metrorail will open at 4 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 20 to accommodate the crowds.
The following stations will be closed, and trains will bypass these stations for security reasons from Sunday, Jan. 19 at 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21:
- McPherson Square (Blue, Orange, Silver lines)
- Federal Triangle (Blue, Orange, Silver lines)
- Smithsonian (Blue, Orange, Silver lines)
- Mt. Vernon Sq.-Convention Center (Green, Yellow lines)
- Archives-Navy Memorial (Green, Yellow lines)
In addition, Pentagon (Blue, Yellow lines) will be closed on Jan. 20.
Metrobus
On Inauguration Day, buses will operate on a Saturday Supplemental schedule. Check timetables for schedule information.
From Jan. 18-21, detours will be in effect in downtown D.C. due to the security perimeter and road closures. Customers traveling through downtown should allow additional travel time.
The following bus routes will be affected: 3F, 3Y, 7A, 10A, 11Y, 16A, 16C, 16E, 16Y, 22A, 38B, 31, 32, 33, 36, 42, 43, 52, 54, 59, 63, 64, 70, 74, 79, 80, 96, D4, D6, D8, G8, L2, N2, N4, N6, P6, S2, S9, X2, X8, and X9.
On Jan. 20, the Pentagon Transit Center will be closed. Buses will detour to Pentagon City.
Pedestrian Safety
Some additional security measures are already going into place and the public will notice high visibility patrols, fencing and barriers going into place. District residents and business owners are asked to plan for widespread road closures across Downtown Washington. DC residents and visitors attending inaugural events or traveling through downtown are encouraged to use public transportation as much as possible this weekend.

If you are wondering if you local bank, library, or other business is open the week of inauguration, give them a call to see if there are any adjustments to their hours or operations.
Capital Bikeshare Stations within the National Mall area and other secure zones may be temporarily closed. Use the Capital Bikeshare app to find other nearby stations.
